As schools revisit state curriculum standards, as more U.S. states adopt Common Core, and as public libraries work to support their local school systems, EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) is collating information to better serve students, educators, and librarians.
EBSCO offers a number of K-12 products that can help educators prepare their students for success in school, in college, and beyond. These include Literary Reference Center / Literary Reference Center Plus, History Reference Center, NoveList Plus, Poetry & Short Story Reference Center, Points of View Reference Center, Science Reference Center, Biography Reference Center, and English Language Learner Reference Center. Database packages for elementary, middle, and high schools are also available—Primary Online Package, Middle Online Package, Complete Online Package, and Ultra Online Package.
Integration of 21st Century Information Technologies
According to the Common Core State Standards Initiative, students who are college- and career-ready “use technology and digital media strategically and capably. Students employ technology thoughtfully to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language use. They tailor their searches online to acquire useful information efficiently, and they integrate what they learn using technology with what they learn offline.”
EBSCO provides students and teachers with the best possible research experience with advanced search and retrieval options for relevant information retrieval. Students and teachers have easy access to EBSCO's online resources anytime, anywhere, from any computer or mobile device.
In addition, EBSCOhost is the most widely used research platform in academic institutions around the world. Using EBSCO’s resources in support of your school's curriculum will ensure that graduates are well-prepared to excel with projects and research in the university environment.
Spanning key subject areas, EBSCO content includes thousands of informational texts to support the shift toward nonfiction reading and analysis in all classrooms, including primary and secondary source documents. Curated from a number of popular and academic sources, articles range in text type and level of text complexity.
EBSCO’s databases also may feature:
- multimedia content including photos, maps, charts, graphs, videos, and audio recordings
- lesson plans
- research guides
- citation help

Lexile Reading Levels
The Common Core State Standards promote increasing text complexity to help students build on literacy success and challenge themselves with more complex texts. Several EBSCO databases include Lexiles, or reading levels, in citation information. Lexiles...
- provide educators with an estimate of the result’s reading difficulty and the approximate grade-level reading ability required for comprehension,
- suit the needs of students with varying reading abilities and interests, and
- provide alternative choices to accommodate individualized education programs (IEPs).
Text-to-Speech for HTML articles
Available in most of EBSCO's school databases, this feature helps struggling readers and those learning English while also providing teachers with an alternative content delivery option.
Curriculum Standards Module
EBSCO's Curriculum Standards Module, powered by Academic Benchmarks, can help teachers correlate EBSCO content quickly and easily to Common Core, state- or Canadian province-specific curriculum standards. Available in several interfaces, the module provides browsing of specific benchmarks, many which have recommended search strings for successful content retrieval. Benchmarks can be easily saved as text files for integration with written lesson plans.
Founded in 2003, Academic Benchmarks helps K-12 education companies overcome the challenge of mounting metadata related to learning resources. Academic Benchmarks offers advanced tools and professional services, built upon the industry's most comprehensive collection of the world's academic standards, to enable clients to focus on developing superior products that improve education. Academic Benchmarks has been an EBSCO data partner since 2007.
