You could say reading saved my life. I lived on a busy street without the luxury of other playmates my age. School came easily for me and so making friends was not. The characters in the books I read –Owl from Arnold Lobel's Owl at Home, Roald Dahl's The Enormous Crocodile, and Beverly Cleary's Ramona became my companions and their stories became ways I could experience the world outside my own understanding.

This proved helpful when I became a public librarian in the youth department. Helping children and teens find the right books when they need it can be a lifesaver to them, and no one knows that better than me. My favorite part of the job was seeing that shy, awkward teen start to thrive in the library environment where different views and interests are welcome. Second only to that, was seeing that light in their eyes when you direct them to a book they are excited about.

Now as a NoveList editor I'm still a part of that by creating reader's advisory articles that will help you do just that. Think of me as your book broker, combing through NoveList to find the best content to help you serve your kids and teens now. Sign up to receive updates.
