What Core Collections has taught me about Science Fiction
As savvy librarians know, Core Collections is a useful tool for both selection and weeding. As one of the intrepid genre specialists who works on Core Collections, I get to do both. And it’s surprisingly fun, considering how many Excel spreadsheets are involved. But the process of evaluating titles has also made me think a lot about how genre collections are built and maintained. Here are some things I’ve learned.

Core Collections as a weeding solution
While buying awesome new books for a library collection is probably the most glamorous part of collection development, let’s not forget how important it is to maintain a collection that is attractive and relevant to your community. After all, a well-curated collection that people love browsing will ultimately lead to higher circulation.

The joys of weeding
I loved weeding in all its forms. I would print out that non-circ list, head to my section, and it would just be me and the books (and whatever patron stopped to ask me questions). Weeding was a solitary time to put my hands on my collection, to better understand the gaps in what we offered, the surprising things that circulated, and the books that weren’t circing, but maybe needed to.
