With a brand new addition to the British Royal Family and a wedding planned for mid-May, it feels like royals fever is at an all-time high. How do we serve readers who are hungry to read about the lives and loves of the nobility? Whether you are setting your alarm to watch the nuptials live or can't tell your Stuarts from your Hanovers, NoveList is here to help!
For some ready-made lists that cater to those counting down the days to the royal wedding, check out our Royal Romance (Adult) and For Fans Of…Royal Romance (Teens) Recommended Reads lists. These lists are perfect fodder for book displays or bookmarks that can draw attention to how your library's offerings complement a significant pop culture event. There are plenty of books on these two lists to tide over the most ardent fan until Harry and Meghan tie the knot or to keep the love going long after the chime of the church bells fade. A Princess in Theory by Alyssa Cole and The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan are two of my personal favorites.
There are certainly plenty of readers who don't need a special occasion or the romance hook to dive into the lives of kings, queens, and the various scheming and machinations that ensue when power and a crown are at stake. For those readers we offer the historical fiction list Royal Reads (Adult) and the nonfiction list Royalty throughout History (Adult).
Our Recommended Reads lists are a great starting point, but to satisfy avid royal readers who want to go beyond our lists you can construct a search that targets what a reader is looking for. Using field codes you can combine genres, appeals, subjects, location, or time period to retrieve a list of titles based on the factors most important to your reader. For example, the string GX "Biographical fiction" AND SC "Character-driven" AND SD "Great Britain" AND DE "Women rulers" AND ND "Book" typed into the search box will bring back a set of 77 titles that are character-driven biographical novels of women rulers in Great Britain through the ages.
Now that you know all the ways to appease the enduring appetite for regal reads, you are well-prepared to go forth and conquer* (your reading list).
*Crown not included.
