Old town roads to love

Following the immense success of Rachael Treasure’s Jillaroo in 2005, rural romance emerged as a beloved genre of Australian readers. These books celebrate rural life, farming, and close-knit communities as well as the natural beauty of the Australian landscape. With August bringing us Bookstore Romance Day, (and Read a Romance month in North America) we thought it was a good time to revisit the rich atmosphere, strong features and independent heroines of Australian rural romances.

Not sure what to recommend? Here are a few rural romances that your patrons may enjoy:

  • The Desert Midwife by Fiona McIntosh
  • Wildflower Ridge by Maya Linnell
  • Mr. Right Now by Karly Lane
  • Birthright by Fiona Lowe
  • Outback Sisters by Rachael Johns

Fortunately, finding other rural romance titles in NoveList is easy using our subject headings, themes, and genres.

If you’d just like to peruse romances by Australian authors, try this search:

GX Australian fiction AND GX contemporary romances

To get to our rural romances, you can start adding in themes and subject headings, for example:

Other subject headings you may want to consider include farm life, small town life, wilderness areas, ranches, and farms.

You can find strong women protagonists in the outback by looking under the women’s lives and relationships genre as well.  Try the searches below to find great books like:
