In the midst of all your summer reading program hub-bub, your adult readers' habits are shifting too. Some unwind, chill out, and read more. Others are lucky to squeeze any reading in between all their summer adventures. I've pulled together a couple ways to offer both crowds some refreshing reads -- without you having to break a sweat.
Break out of the "beach reads" rut! Short stories and novellas make perfect end of summer reads. With variety to suit every taste, they're easy to pick up (and put down) as time allows -- and no worries about losing the plot.
Or you can add PG (page count) to NoveList searches to find books of a certain length. Pick a number! For example:
You can combine these to find a page range. Paste this search to find some really short "shorts:"
(PG > 50 AND PG < 200) AND RL 1 AND NF Fiction
Using the code RL 1 will limit results to adult reading level and NF Fiction limits to fiction only results. Once you get your list, you can use the appeal terms on the left to narrow the books down to the short that’s perfect for your summer.
Searches like the one above is called field code searching. Field codes are a great way to add control and precision to your search. Fortunately, NoveList has plenty of resources to help you master field code searching, including a step-by-step video and several handy cheat sheets. And if your readers are very particular about the genre of their short summer read, check out our Genre Guide and our webcast on appealing to genre readers.
