2020 Youth Media Award Winners

As a youth services librarian at heart, I’m so delighted that I get to celebrate ALA’s annual Youth Media Awards in the NoveList office. My coworkers will attest that I burst into happy tears at least once each year. (Shout out to YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award Winner Free Lunch by Rex Ogle for bringing on the waterworks this morning!)

We know that our customers also experience lots of emotion on YMA day. Perhaps you or your colleagues are proud of your committee work. Could be that some of your favorite local authors or illustrators received an honor!  (Something we experienced with Kelly Starling Lyons’ and Kwame Mbalia’s wins this morning). Or maybe you have that fluttering feeling of watching your hold lists zooming upward on a newly crowned classic!  (Not to speak of the inevitable panic in collection development when a few honorees aren’t in the catalog (Yikes!). Here’s hoping everyone felt mostly professional excitement, vicarious happiness for our favorite books and authors, and (maybe) even a little vindication of one’s own excellent taste this morning.

Today is a wonderful day to spread that joy to your library customers. Why not talk up your favorite under-the-radar honoree or shine some light on a category that isn’t the Newbery, Caldecott, or Printz? (No shade, Big 3, but all those lovely books are going to be checked out posthaste.) The good news is that gorgeous flyers are already available in LibraryAware for 22 different YMA award categories (read the full list of winners here). We simply couldn’t help ourselves!
