In the Bleak Midwinter by Julia Spencer-Fleming
ISBN: 9780312288471

"'We're just like men priests, except we're willing to pull over and ask directions.'"

I'd been meaning to read Julia Spencer-Fleming's well-reviewed Clare Fergusson and Russ Van Alstyne series for quite some time. When I finally did read the 1st in the series, In the Bleak Midwinter, I enjoyed it so much that I had to read the others and am now in the middle of the 7th and most recent entry! Spencer-Fleming's debut novel begins just before Christmas when brand-new priest Clare Fergusson finds a brand-new baby wrapped in blankets on her Episcopal church's upstate New York doorstep.

At the hospital with the child, ex-Army helicopter pilot Clare meets ex-Army MP and current Millers Kill Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne. Before you know it, these two are not only working together to find the child's parents, but stumbling upon a murder and developing strong feelings for each other... even though Russ is married. If you like compelling mysteries that have romantic elements and a strong sense of place, try these books -- but as the relationships and events build on each other, it's best to read them in order. Recommended by Dawn Towery.
