All right, readers, we’re ready for our close-up!

Yes, your favorite catalogers here at NoveList have been working hard on some new genre headings that are as bold as the books they are based on…. Books to TV and Books to movies.

Did you have a huge increase on the number of holds on Game of Thrones when the TV series first came out? Are there already a lot of holds on Cloud Atlas? Then you know how much the release of a TV show or movie can affect a book’s circulation. Now, NoveList is giving you a way to find these books with some new subject headings.

These new genre headings will give you quick and easy ways to find books that have been adapted for the big (or small!) screen. With a simple search, you can find those in-demand books faster than a Quidditch seeker. You could create a book display that’s creepier than the Bates Motel. You might even start a new book group with more sex appeal than 007.

You can use Books to movies to find books or short stories that have been adapted into a single theatrical or made-for-TV movie. We’re talking about everything from the obvious The Hunger Games to lesser known titles like The Wettest Country in the World (recently adapted into Lawless) and short stories like “Why don’t you dance” (which was adapted into the film Everything Must Go).

The small screen gets the same treatment with Books to TV. You can find books that are broken up into episodes for a television series or miniseries like Boardwalk Empire or The Thornbirds. Keep in mind that this subject heading applies only to books whose story and plot is adapted for television and not to those which merely feature the same set of characters. So, Pride and Prejudice is in but the Sookie Stackhouse books are out (sorry, Alexander Skarsgard).

It is easy to take advantage of the new subject headings.

books to movies

  1. Enter “Books to movies” (or “Books to TV”) in quotes in the search box.
  2. On the results page, use the “Narrow results column” to choose other genres, subject headings, and/or appeal factors.
  3. You can also click the “Lists and Articles” tab to see what kind of extra creative content we have too. (Our Books to Movies list that focuses on the current year’s movies is updated quarterly. Plus, we’ve got several great Recommended Reads lists, as well as some book display ideas.)

Don’t forget about our other related headings -- Movie tie-ins and TV tie-ins. These are books adapted from film and TV. Think movie or TV episode novelizations!

So far over 2,000 books have these headings in NoveList, and we’re in the process of adding them to lots more, so stay tuned! If you start searching for these genre headings, we know you’ll give them two enthusiastic thumbs up!
