We are absolutely thrilled here at NoveList to be able to announce that our very own Lisa Schimmer has been selected as the Romance Writers of America (RWA) Librarian of the Year for 2015!

Since 1995 the RWA Cathie Linz Librarian of the Year Award has been given to a librarian who excels in support and advocacy of romance authors, the romance genre, and romance readers.  Previous recipients include Joyce Saricks, Mary K. Chelton, John Charles, and Lynne Welch (as well as Durham’s own Jennifer Lohmann).

Romance Writers of America “is a nonprofit trade association whose mission is to advance the professional interests of career-focused romance writers through networking and advocacy.” They administer the RITA Awards, which set the standard for the best in romance publishing. Lisa has received a huge recognition from a guiding light in the romance industry.

In the last two years, NoveList has embarked on an extensive cataloging project to re-examine the genres we use for our fiction records. We’ve assembled multiple genre project teams to research publishing and reading trends, and see what genre headings we might add or change to help our users find books that they love.

Lisa was a natural choice to lead our romance team, and the work she did in this area was truly phenomenal. She and her team updated cataloging for over 11,000 romance novels, created a number of new romance sub-genres while assuring that our existing genres were being used correctly, and introduced a set of “sensuality” appeal terms to help readers find books with just the right heat index – anything from chaste to mildly sensuous to steamy to explicit! As Lisa wrote for a marketing piece in her trademark style, “How much sex is too much?  Whether romance readers are looking for some good, clean fun, or a down and dirty romp, appeal can help them find their safe word (or comfort zone).”

Lisa’s focus on cataloging and access for readers and librarians was intriguing to the selection committee, and really made her nomination stand out. We are so proud of the good work she has done, and look forward to seeing where she goes from here!
