"Can you show me where the Goosebumps books are?"

Cold terror like icy fingers grabs and squeezes my heart. My pulse quickens and the air leaves my lungs. These words fill me with dread and mounting horror because I know, as I rise from my chair, what I will find when I walk to the shelf that should hold R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series -- a thing that fills every librarian's heart with terror: an empty shelf.

Goosebumps bookmark
Download the printable of this bookmark, made in LibraryAware, and share the spookiness with your favorite Goosebumps fanatic.

If your library collection is anything like mine, then you know that there are never enough Goosebumps books to go around. Since 1992, the Goosebumps series has been a popular choice for middle grade readers who are looking for scary books. Middle grade horror fiction can be difficult to find and finding books to please Goosebumps fans always seemed especially challenging to me. Appeal factors are a great way to find books that give readers a similar experience, rather than trying to match books by plot or content.

What’s the Appeal?

  • Short chapters, each ending with a cliffhanger.
  • Scary, suspenseful and creepy tone
  • Page-turning, quick read
  • Average kids must save themselves from scary situations
  • An isolated setting, where help is scarce
  • Slow-building tension
  • A winning combination of humor and thrills
  • Adults are clueless or powerless
  • No more than 150 pages each

How can you spook your readers when there are no Goosebumps on the shelves? NoveList can help. Download this printable bookmark of Goosebumps read-alikes to pass out to the young horror fanatics at your library. (Psst: If your library subscribes to LibraryAware, it’s easy to customize this bookmark by swapping out titles for ones your library owns.)
