Focusing on the early, home-grown literary tradition, this collection represents literary journals published in the cities and towns of the Northeast outside of Boston. This collection emphasizes small publications from the remote places that comprised the backbone of the Northeastern region from 1789-1878.

The Literary Periodicals of New England, 1789-1878 collection includes many relatively obscure titles that paint a picture of a unique literary tradition that is starkly different from the more dominant literature found in mass-circulated publications. In addition, this collection offers periodicals written about Yankees and their culture. For researchers of the 19th century, titles in this collection offer a rich insight into an often overlooked area of literary and artistic production. Two examples are Brother Jonathan and Yankee Notions.
