American Antiquarian Society Historical Periodicals Collection: Series 1

EBSCO has partnered with the American Antiquarian Society (AAS) to provide digital access to what is by far the most comprehensive collection of American periodicals published between 1691 and 1877. In total, more than 6,500 periodicals will be available, eclipsing all other online resources in this area.

The American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Historical Periodicals Collection: Series 1 presents over 500 titles dating from 1691 through 1820.

This series consists of over 850,000 pages, and is broad and deep in scope. Almost every seventeenth- and eighteenth-century American title is represented in addition to the majority of works published before 1821. Subject strengths include but are not limited to Afro-Americana, agriculture, children's literature, education, eighteenth-century imprints, leisure and hobbies, Masonic works, medicine, religion, science and technology, the trades, and women's literature. Long runs of popular magazines can be found here, as well as unusual and short-lived titles, such as works published in Peru and Cuba, an early millennial publication, satirical serials, music journals, and titles printed and edited by women.

The American Antiquarian Society (AAS) Historical Periodicals Collections include digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals never before available outside the walls of the American Antiquarian Society, the premier library documenting the life of America's people from the Colonial Era through the Civil War and Reconstruction. This content is not available for acquisition in digital form from any source other than EBSCO Publishing, and keyword searching is available on all titles.

An image viewer unique to EBSCO allows researchers and students to view content and manage research in innovative ways.

The interface replicates the experience of browsing and reading original archival material while also allowing keyword access, manipulation of page views, note-taking capabilities, and various downloading options. Contextual essays found on the Reference Shelf provide overviews of important titles in the Collection and connects them to broader themes in American history.

Five series of periodicals will be released, dating from 1691 to 1877. The current segmentation is outlined below. Note that the years of the segments may be refined but the total number of pages in the collection, currently estimated at ten to twelve million, will not change.
