EMR Integration via EBSCOhost Integration Toolkit (EIT)
EMR Integration, available via the EBSCOhost Integration Toolkit (EIT), streamlines integration between EBSCO Publishing's online clinical, nursing care, patient education, and medical research resources and all Electronic Health/Medical Records (EHR/EMR), decision support and patient record applications. More
EIT helps clinicians and nurses rapidly select topics from an EHR/EMR and retrieve the contextually relevant, evidence-based condition or procedure summary from an EBSCO resource such as Nursing Reference Center, and dramatically reduces the cost and complexity of custom integration for hospital IT departments.

EBSCOhost Integration Toolkit Medical Flyer
Improving service quality and reducing medical errors are critical success factors for health care providers today. Expanding the use of information technology and evidence-based medicine are two key practices being used to achieve these goals. EIT enables health care providers to connect these two initiatives and deliver the best available evidence to point-of-care users such as: physicians, nurses, therapists, pharmacists and patients, directly at the patient's bedside and intelligently from within the EHR/EMR.
EIT provides a comprehensive set of flexible integration options to establish direct links from EHR/EMR or other clinical applications, to applicable clinical reference resources from EBSCO. For example, support of the industry standard Infobutton allows easy integration from the EHR to the appropriate clinical reference, helping clinicians at the point-of-care to rapidly select topics from an EHR and retrieve the relevant, evidence-based condition or procedure summary from an EBSCO resource.
EIT is optimized to enable hospitals to rapidly access EBSCO Publishing's point-of-care clinical, nursing and patient references, DynaMed, Nursing Reference Center, and patient education products, as well as all of our industry leading research databases such as CINAHL Plus with Full Text and MEDLINE with Full Text.
Enterprise Search Integration (ESI)
Enterprise Search Integration (ESI) makes EBSCOhost database metadata content available to an Enterprise Search Application (ESA) search index. The end result is that an ESA user can search EBSCOhost content within an integrated result list in combination with other databases and local content, under one common interface. ESAs can index millions of structured and unstructured documents from several content sources, and can utilize internal/external taxonomies to present users with a rich search experience - far exceeding today's Federated Search products in usability. More
Some of the most popular ESAs include:
- Endeca
- FAST Search
- Autonomy
- Northern Light
- Lucene/Solr
- Google Search Appliance
EBSCOhost can push article metadata with links back to the full text. Databases are accessible as XML via different mediums, including FTP. Incremental updates to the content are available in new XML files. This allows ESAs to index the content on their own time, and avoids the resource intensive processes and duplicate HTTP hits associated with web crawling.
Learning Management System (LMS)
Targeted eLearning content provides organizations with relevant, timely information applicable to a wide variety of job and business needs within the organization. Whether used as core learning activities or as reference material for existing eLearning content, users will be well served in their daily performance support and talent development activities. More
Design eLearning programs or augment existing programs with content on:
- Health Care Administration
- Sports Medicine
- Public Heath, Diseases
- Alternative Medicine
- Behavioral Sciences
- Mental Health
- and many others
Full LMS support is also provided for the CINAHL® and MEDLINE® products.
Persistent Links
Users can leverage EBSCO's persistent linking technology to rapidly embed direct and dynamic links to clinical content from EBSCO into an application, portal or intranet. These persistent links use HTTP or URL syntax to direct users to specific topics, searches, journals or categories. The portal or intranet administrator can create, remove or change the persistent links at any time.
Web Service (XML Gateway)
The EBSCO XML Gateway is a SOAP and REST compatible web service used to establish direct links from any EHR/EMR or Enterprise Search Engine application to applicable resources from EBSCO. The EBSCO XML Gateway provides customers with multiple integration methods, allowing them to submit customized and contextually based search and retrieval requests, as well as to tailor the format of the retrieved XML content to suit the needs of their users and web sites.More
Features of the EBSCO XML Gateway include:
- Keyword, Subject, Image, Index, and Thesaurus search
- Article retrieval
- SmartLinks, CustomLinks, and Persistent Links
- Support of multiple industry vocabularies including MeSH, CINAHL, ICD9, ICD10 and SNOMED-CT
- SOAP and REST-like access
- Secure (SSL) access – https support
- Usage statistics reporting
- Real-time updates
