The Wright Brothers
Orville (1871-1948) and Wilbur (1867-1912)
"More than anything else the sensation is one of perfect peace mingled with an excitement that strains every nerve to the utmost, if you can conceive of such a combination." -Wilbur Wright
"The exhilaration of flying is too keen, the pleasure too great, for it to be neglected as a sport." -Orville Wright
Brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright designed and flew the first controllable airplane in sustained flight. Their historic 1903 flight took place in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The design for their historic plane, The Flyer, grew from the Wrights' experience designing and repairing bicycles. Today, a replica of the aircraft is displayed in the Smithsonian Museum.
