Juan Ponce de Leon
Widely associated with the mythical "Fountain of Youth," Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer who claimed a land he named "Pascua Florida" for the Spanish crown in the spring of 1513. It is present-day Florida. His arrival in Florida came as a result of his search for a legendary fountain that restored the aged to youthful appearance. He never found it, but did explore the Gulf of Mexico, and also encountered the powerful Gulf Stream current, a phenomenon previously unknown to European sailors.
