John Muir (1838-1914)
"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks."
John Muir spearheaded the movement to create national parks in scenic, pristine areas of the United States, especially the Yosemite area and the Sierra Valley. His efforts in conservation were facilitated by his long friendship with President Theodore Roosevelt, who was also an avid outdoorsman. Muir went on to found the environmental group The Sierra Club. A trip to the Muir Woods outside San Francisco brings visitors to a lush and tranquil redwood forest memorializing this important conservationist.
