Samuel F.B. Morse (1791-1872)
Inventor of the Telegraph

"What hath God wrought?"

-his first words sent via telegraph
Samuel Finlay Morse was the 19th century artist and inventor best known for inventing the telegraph. The technology employed a combination of electrical wires and magnets to transmit a series of dots and dashes, known as Morse code, from one telegraph to the next, allowing people to communicate across many miles. A decade after Morse's invention first appeared, telegraph wires crossed the expanding territory of the United States.
