Martha Graham (1894-1991)

"You are unique, and if that is not fulfilled, then something has been lost."

An American dancer and choreographer, Martha Graham is one of the foremost influences on modern dance in the 20th century. Her most famous work, "Chronicle," was choreographed in 1936, and referenced events of the day through dance. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1975 by President Gerald Ford, whose wife, First Lady Betty Ford, was a former student of Graham's. In 1988 Time named her one of the 100 most important people of the century.
