Meriwether Lewis (1774 - 1809) and William Clark (1770 - 1838)
"The musquetos continue to infest us in such manner that we can scarcely exist. My dog even howls with the torture he experiences."
-Meriwether Lewis
"Great joy in Camp we are in view of the Ocian, this great Pacific Octean which we been so long anxious to see, and the roreing or noise made by the waves brakeing on the rockey shores (as I suppose) may be heard distictly." -William Clark
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are remembered as great explorers who traversed the wild, unsettled lands of the United States' Louisiana Territory. The United Stated purchased the Territory, spreading from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, from France in 1803. Their Corps of Discovery departed in 1805 and journeyed through the heartland of America, over the Rocky Mountains and, lastly, to the shores of the Pacific Ocean.
