Leif Ericson
Viking explorer Leif Ericson is widely regarded as the first European to set foot in the New World, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. At the beginning of the eleventh century, Ericson and a small group of Vikings sailed from Norway to the northern coast of North America, and named the area Vinland, from an Old Norse word meaning "wine land" or "meadow land".
