Wayne Gretzky (1961- )

"You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take."

Canadian-born Wayne Gretzky, known as "The Great One," dominated hockey from 1979 to 1999, most notably with the Edmonton Oilers, and the Los Angeles Kings. His leadership and playmaking skills earned him hero status across North America and in European hockey circles. His appeal and influence brought professional ice hockey to unlikely areas of the United States, such as Florida, Texas, and southern California, and introduced the sport to a new generation of fans. At the time of his retirement as a player, Gretzky either held or tied 61 National Hockey League records. His jersey number, 99, is the only number ever to be retired across the league.
