Frederick Douglass (1817 - 1895)
"I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs."
Frederick Douglass was born a slave, and used his keen intellect, convincing oratory, and determination to gain his freedom and advance the cause of African American civil rights. Douglass helped slaves escaping along the Underground Railroad, and was an instrumental statesman in the abolition of the slavery in the United States.
