Duke Ellington (1899-1974)

"I merely took the energy it takes to pout and wrote some blues."

Edward Kennedy Ellington, who came to be known as "Duke," was America's leading jazz composer, pianist, and bandleader. Known for innovation in jazz, swing, and sacred compositions, Ellington's most popular songs are "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" and "Take the A Train." He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969.
