Christopher Columbus (1451-1506)
"Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World."
Christopher Columbus, the Italian-born mariner who wanted to find a westward route to Asia, instead found a "New World" for Europeans to explore and colonize. Ironically, he always maintained he had discovered outlying parts of Asia. He made four voyages of exploration between 1492 and 1504, sailing on behalf of Spain, which granted him the title "Admiral of the Ocean Sea" and "Viceroy of the Indies."
