Chief Joseph
"It does not require many words to speak the truth."
Chief Hinmatulatkekt, whose name means "Thunder Rolling in the Mountains," is widely known by his Christian name, Chief Joseph. He was chief of the Nez Perce tribe in America's Pacific Northwest, a people who once sheltered and guided the Corps of Discovery in their exploration. A skilled leader and gifted orator, he led his people in an historic, brave, and tragically arduous attempt to escape U.S. troops and forced relocation to a small reservation. Trapped just 30 miles from the Canadian border and freedom, the chief marked his surrender and vow "to fight no more, forever," with well documented dignity and eloquence. Joseph and the Nez Perce stand as representatives of cultures persecuted and marginalized by Manifest Destiny.
